What is IPv4?

A practical explanation of IPv4 addresses, format, and why they still matter.

IPv4 is the fourth version of the Internet Protocol and still the most widely used addressing system online.

An IPv4 address consists of four number groups, for example 192.0.2.1. Each group ranges from 0 to 255.

IPv4 made the early internet possible, but the address space is limited, which is one reason IPv6 was introduced.

Why IPv4 still matters

Most home networks, routers, websites and services still support IPv4. Many users still reach websites primarily over IPv4.
